Background:
The Chicago Post Office will turn its spacious East Lobby into a showcase of Hispanic creativity.

The Post Office will dedicate the 26th stamp in the Postal Service’s Literary Arts series, honoring Julia de Burgos, one of Puerto Rico’s most celebrated poets. (The stamp goes on sale September 14.) A revolutionary writer, thinker, and activist, de Burgos wrote more than 200 poems that probe issues of love, feminism, and political and personal freedom. Her groundbreaking works combine the intimate with the universal. They speak powerfully to women, minorities, the poor, and the dispossessed, urging them to defy constricting social conventions and find their own true selves.

Cynthia Givens, a Chicago letter carrier and writer, will present poetry in tribute to de Borgos.

The event will also feature the talents of local Hispanic artists. Comedian and comedy show producer Mike Oquendo will give a presentation on Hispanic culture. Additionally, works by painters Sergio Gomez and Janice Aponte will be displayed throughout the space. Mr Gomez will create a live drawing during the event.

Authentic cuisine from local Hispanic restaurants will be served.

The event is free and open to the public.
